Hire a Great Home Remodeling Contractor With These 5 Tips

A quick search on the Internet for “home renovation contractors near me” or a brief paging through the phone book will undoubtedly reveal a number of so-called renovation “experts”.   But finding a qualified and reliable home remodeling contractor who you can trust is no easy feat.

Why Great Local Renovation Contractors Are So Hard to Find

There may be several great – and not so great – local remodeling contractors in your area.  The problem: even the “best” may not be the right contractor for your project.

One of the leading reasons why it is difficult to find great local renovation contractors is because you may not know what type of contractor you really need.  For example, if you are planning a major total home renovation project like flipping houses for contractors, a general contractor is who you will want.  For smaller jobs, you will want to source contractors who have experience in your project such as those who are experienced in plumbing or cutting tiles.

The other major issue is finding a reputable contractor you can rely on.  Contractors are notorious for their lack of punctuality and extending project deadlines, and we have all heard the nightmarish stories about projects gone wrong (which can be costly for property owners to fix).

How to Find The Right Contractor for Your Project

As time consuming as it may be to sift through the many local renovation contractors in your area, doing your research beforehand will save you headaches and stress down the road.

Tip 1: Know what you want before taking estimates

Before you make a few calls, know exactly what you want done and which materials you want to be used.  This will help you determine which house remodeling contractors residential construction will be a good fit for the job.

Tip 2: Don’t be a guinea pig

Don’t let yourself become a test subject for a reno company.  Find at least three contractors or companies which regularly works on the type of project you want done, and then check their references.

Tip 3: Be careful when taking references

It is a good idea to get references from those you trust, like friends, family and co-workers.  But the contractor who did such a fantastic job retiling their bathroom may not be the best option if you will be knocking down walls and building an addition to your home.

Tip 4: Ask what jobs they will be personally handling

It’s not uncommon for a contractor to hire subcontractors to help out with the work or to take on other tasks.  Ask for an employee list or a list of subcontractors from the contractor to ensure that they will not be hiring casual labor off the street, and then check their references or online reviews.

Tip 5: Expect the right contractor to be busy

The best contractors are the busiest Click To Tweet Don’t be surprised if the contractor you find is the most qualified for your project is not to get started for at least a few weeks if not months.

Finding the right contractor is not without its challenges, but investing the time now will ultimately save you time and money.  Once you have found the right contractor, negotiate the ground rules, make sure that the contract you sign details everything you want done, and do not pay over 10% of the estimated job total before your project begins.

I like your suggestion that you ask about what other subcontractors they may be hiring to help you with your home remodeling. My husband and I want to put a little work into our house and we’re hoping to hire a contractor to help us. I will definitely be discussing what other people may be helping our contractor with our home remodeling so I can make sure I can trust them as well.

I like that you mentioned to make sure you find out how much work the contractor will take on personally, and what he will be subcontracting. That way, you can get a good idea of all the people who will be working on your remodel. My home had some water damage after a flood, and I am going to have it restored and remodeled as soon as I can. I will keep this in mind as I search for a contractor.

I like that you mention how it’s hard to find the right contractor because you might not know exactly what you need. My brother is looking to do some home renovations but needs to find a contractor. I’ll be sure to talk to him about figuring out exactly what he needs to be done before hiring.

I wanted to get my space renovated and I’m looking for some tips on how I could choose a great contractor. I agree that we shouldn’t be hiring contractors who don’t have that much experience or who only got few projects. We should get contractors that are experienced and have great client feedbacks. Thanks!
